About www.Soccer101.me The site was created to provide a source of information for coaches, especially those just starting out into the soccer scene. We feature non-political and non-affiliated soccer information. We believe in America there is a need and a place for all soccer organizations, I just wish everyone would always work towards the same goal, the development of the youth and soccer in the country as a whole. The US has come a long way in the last 20 years with respect to soccer. My hope is that the growth continues. About me: (John Chavez) I grew up with the sport back in Mexico, and just as most kids there, I watched several games per week on TV, when possible, and then went to the street to play, trying to match the players on TV. (every day) At Age 13 I started to play with adults (18+) and because of my size at that age, I typically got stuck as a keeper, which I actually loved. At age 14 I coached my first team (a U10 Boys team). I remember securing sponsorship, registering the team, coaching practices on the street and attending games on dirt fields where the 9 year olds would play with 8x24 goals. What a time! Throughout the years I always stayed involved in the sport but took a sabbatical from playing after getting married. I stayed clear of soccer until my children started playing in AYSO back in 2002. At first I did not want to go back to coach and I only officiated games when I was asked. I remember watching games from the car just so my knowledge of the game and passion would not get the best of me and would make me tell the volunteer coach what needed to be done. It was hard sometimes! Finally in the fall of 2005 my 8 year old decided she wanted to play competitive soccer and there was no coach available for her and 7 other girls. So after many calls, we made a team and got back into coaching in the spring of 06. About My Coaching Experience: I have coached youth and adult men and women soccer teams, I also coached and trained 8 to 16 year olds to race bicycles when I was 17 to 19 years old. The last several years I have coached Adult Futsal teams, men, women and men masters in addition to outdoor teams from U6 through U14, boys and girls, and full master teams. I am a student of the game and to this date I continue to buy books and videos so I can learn what methods and ideas are out there by other qualified coaches. I also enjoy watching other coaches run practices just to see what I can learn. My record, if I may boast, is that my Men Futsal teams have always been competitive, my master Futsal teams have participated and won Championships, the women Futsal teams have been competitive and have reached league finals. In the last two years I have been able to take three different girls teams U12 & 14 to play in Championship games at tournaments. The youth teams I have coached have always grown on skill, ability and knowledge of the game. My most recent coaching venture after taking the last fall off, has given me the pleasure of seeing a brand new U12 girls team in the spring 2009 (NV Patriots) start from scratch and take second place at the Comstock Shootout in Carson City, NV in the spring of 09 on PK's. This after taking my previous U12 girls team to the Championship game at the Sage Brush Start up tournament last spring in 08 before taking the 08 fall season off. Now this team (in the U13 division) with a lot of new and different players has reached two other Championships and won their first in the fall of 2009. About My Coaching Style: I coach with the aim to give individual players the tools they need to play at their best. I try to always teach simplicity and basic skills until the players are ready to move on, no point in teaching a player to "spread the defense" if they can't trap the ball! I pay close attention to players individually but also as a group. I like to manage games and teach an attacking style of soccer, with play development and vertical wing attacks. I grew up being a Chivas de Guadalajara fan and have always enjoy their style of play and inevitably I like to teach it. However, I am also a sucker for the Barcelona style of play.
